A TerraCycle official will be on hand at the March 14 event to talk about, as Adelman says, “the values of eco-capitalism and the hazards of our trash problem.”

Sharpie(R), Paper Mate(R) and EXPO(R), three of the world's most recognized writing and marking brands, today announced a new partnership with TerraCycle(TM), the pioneering upcycling company that finds new ways to repurpose otherwise throwaway items. The partnership will create the world's first program to collect and reuse pens, markers and other writing instruments while also helping raise funds for schools, charities, and non-profits nationwide.

Collection centers called "Writing Instrument Brigades" will be set up at participating locales, primarily in large corporations and schools where writing instruments are used most. For every writing instrument collected at a Writing Instrument Brigade collection center, two cents will be paid to a school, community group, charity or non-profit organization of the participant's choice. Overall, the collection efforts will reduce landfill proliferation, educate and inspire consumers to get involved, and provide much needed funding to schools and non-profit groups nationwide.

Kramer Lane Elementary School fourth graders have been working together to make a difference in the environment. Classes have joined in various service projects as part of their participation in the “Schools Go Green” project with News 12 Long Island. One of these initiatives is an “up-cycling” project with TerraCycle, the makers of eco-friendly products sold at major retail stores.

The students collect and sort food packages such as chip bags and snack wrappers, then box and send them to TerraCycle for recycling. TerraCycle uses the materials to create “green” school supplies, gardening products, household cleaners, and more. Additionally, TerraCycle donates money to the Kramer Lane PTA or any charity of choice for every wrapper or bag the school collects.
