The Writing Instruments Recycling Programme is accepting applications from schools to become BIC Community Champions!

BIC Community Champions either host a collection point at their school or another location in the community acting on their behalf, enabling whole communities to recycle writing instruments. We suggest you take a look at the map below to find your nearest public drop-off point or inform your local school about the initiative today.

The minimum shipment size to earn points on this programme is 15 kg (approx 1,500 pens).

Please complete this application form to register your interest in becoming a BIC Community Champion (your recycling drop-off locations will then be listed on the map above).

How it works

Participating is completely free and very easy.

You can drop off your writing instruments at your nearest BIC® Community Champion (nearest drop-off location).

If you are a member of Writing Instrument collection programme, you can send in your writing instruments as a private collector or sign up as a BIC® Community Champion. If you are a live school in the programme you are more than welcome to register your interest to become a BIC® Community Champion. Click on the ‘Complete the application’ and fill in the application form. We only accept one BIC Community Champion per community.

When you want to post a shipment, download a free UPS label from your account, attach it to your shipment and then simply order a free pick-up via UPS by calling 03457 877 877 or book a collection online here. UPS will then collect from your location. You can also drop-off your parcel at your closest UPS drop-off point, which you can find here

What you can recycle in this programme

Best practices for recycling

Put your used writing instruments in a box. Tape the box together securely ensuring there are no loose edges or corners. Print your pre-paid label and attach it securely to the shipment. Order a pick-up via UPS by calling 03457 877 877, and UPS will collect at your location.

What happens to the waste

Once collected, the writing instruments are separated by material composition, cleaned and melted into hard plastic that can be remolded to make new recycled products. Click here to learn more about the recycling process.

TerraCycle Points

TerraCycle points can be redeemed for a variety of charitable gifts, product bundles or for a payment of £0.01 per point to the non-profit organization or school of your choice. To learn more about our points programme, click here.
